19 Ways To Make Your Website Better

There are always many ways to improve any website. Below, we’ve included a list of 19 ways that you might be able to improve yours.

  1. Add new content regularly. New content is what generate traffic and inspires confidence in your visitors. Consider integrating a blog to make it easier for content to be added.
  2. Proofread it for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. All it takes is one error to make your website seem unprofessional.
  3. Make search engine friendly URLs. If you have a dynamic website, it is likely that your urls contain numbers and question marks. However, this isn’t particularly search engine friendly, nor will it improve your position in search engine results pages. We suggest that you rewrite your urls.
  4. Don’t Use Frames.
  5. Include contact information. If you do not want to post contact information, consider adding a contact form.
  6. Create meta tags. Believe it or not, meta tags can greatly improve your visibility in search engines. Add unique meta tags for each web page.
  7. Optimize images. No one likes a slow-loading website. Reduce the file size of your images to improve load time.
  8. Verify cross-browser compatibility. Make sure that your website looks the same in all modern browsers.
  9. Make a favorites icon. See our article Favicon – What Is It?.
  10. Add a poll or contest. This is a great way to encourage visitors to return to your website.
  11. Decrease load time.
  12. Remove any under construction notices.
  13. Create error pages. Custom error pages increase the professionalism of a website. And they’re easy to make. See Custom Error Pages with .htaccess Files for our tutorial.
  14. Go from tables to CSS.
  15. Add a sitemap. If your website is large, or some of the pages are not easily accessible, we consider that you include a sitemap. This is will also be good for search engines.
  16. Remove or Fix any dead links.
  17. Include a user-friendly navigation menu. Your website’s navigation should be in a prominent location that is consistent from page to page. It should also be easy to use and intuitive.
  18. Remove unnecessary elements. Often websites have a lot of features which are meant to impress visitors. However, many of these features could actually detract from your website. If your website has a flash intro, for example, consider if it adds value. Also, look at your website statistics to see you bounce rate for the intro page.
  19. Don’t Include A Counter. There are very few websites that would benefit by displaying a counter on its pages.

Feel free to add to the list.
