6 Reasons To Host Your Own Blog

If you are interested in starting a new blog, there are many services which will enable you to create it, design it, and maintain it, all without spending a dime. Some of the most popular blog solutions include WordPress, Blogger, and OnlineJournal.

The best thing about using these services is that they enable someone without technical knowledge to create their own online presence, complete with a unique design and subdomain.

However, while it may seem like a good idea to sign up for one of these free services, there are many reasons why they are only ideal for the casual blogger.

Below, we list six reasons why you should host your own blog.

1. Make Money

Most people are interested in blogging because of the potential income that can be generated. However, many of the free hosted solutions do not give you the option to place advertisements on your website. So if you are looking for complete advertising freedom, you will need to host your own blog.

Additionally, some affiliate programs require you to host your own website. Otherwise, your application will not be approved.

2. Build Your Brand

Hosting a blog can also help to build a brand. Over time, your visitors will associate your blog with your domain name, as opposed to a generic subdomain.

Additionally, having a self hosted blog implies professionalism. For example, what would you think if The New York Times website was hosted on Blogger at thenewyorktimes.blogspot.com?

3. Search Engine Optimization

As we mentioned in our article, 5 Reasons You Need A Blog, a blog has many positive SEO benefits. By hosting your blog on your website, you will be able to further optimize your blog to be even more search engine friendly. For example, you can take advantage of SEO plugins.

Even better, if you also have a website, your blog can help generate additional traffic.

4. Design Freedom

While there is a lot of flexibility to create a unique blog template, you can only achieve complete design freedom by hosting your own blog.

5. Scripts & Coding

As your blog grows and you get more and more traffic, you might want to include other applications such as forums, dynamic forms, or a store. Or perhaps you just want to add a little flair with some nice AJAX features. This is not possible with free hosted solutions.

6. Possession of Content

When you host your website, you will always be in possession of all of your files and data. On the contrary, when you use a free hosted solution, you do not have the same freedom to access, download, or backup your data.

Granted, hosting your own blog does require some technical knowledge. And if you are not interested in doing it yourself, it will necessitate a monetary investment to get a developer to build your blog for you. However, it is worth the effort. In the end, you’ll get complete freedom and flexibility to design the ideal blog and make it profitable.

Bottom line is having full control of your blog, is worth the small investment it takes to self host.

I agree with you, but I think Blogger has gotten better since this post was written. I host 2 blogs on blogger using my own templates and domain names. Great Post!

Oh off course it’s better to host your own blog! DOn’t even think of starting something with a free platform. An economy hosting account really don’t cost you a thing. I mean: I have lost at least 2 very good lenses on squidoo.com which had a pr of 2 and pr3 respectively when it was just locked without notice. Then I lost my WordPress blog also being suspended when it stood at pr2. And although I didn’t had my blog for as long as I had my lenses – I lost about 1 years hard work.
Think very carefully when you decide to get a “free blog.”

Ownership of content is the most common issue I know when you use a free hosting for your own blog. These free hosting providers have the control to delete your blog if you don’t strictly follow their rules.

You need to protect your content. Otherwise, all your hardwork might be put into waste if you just simply rely on free hosting. So why not considering paid hosting especially now that other hostings offer discounts.

Simply, you can do anything you want with your blog. Post anything you want without violating rules. Unless you consider the rules of your advertisers, that’s a different issue.

Compared to free hosting blog, paid hosting gives freedom to the blog owner. The control of the blog always lies on the owner including the contents and the way to earn with that blog.

Cool, this is really a cool information for me. Before I am just posting and doing blogs without even thinking of the money thing and now you have given me an idea about Hosting My Own Blog. Thanks!
