Alexa’s New Look Is Just What The Doctor Ordered!

Alexa RedesignEarlier today, Alexa released a long overdue website redesign that features a completely new color scheme and improved graphics. For a company of this size, a redesign is a big gamble, but it seems that their creative team have gotten this right. And that’s not all that’s new! In addition to the new look, Alexa has also rolled out two very helpful enhancements that are sure to improve the user experience:

  1. Enhanced Statistics: Metrics now include detailed information on bounce rates, additional information on page views, and  average time users spend on a site. This makes the statistics much more useful for marketers and investors.
  2. Interface Improvements: Now it is easier than ever to find information. There are tabs which enable quick switching between site info, and the single search field on the top unifies the two search boxes that confused users on the old site.

But of course, with every redesign there are things that we don’t like. In this case, there was one bad change: the increased advertisement space. While it makes sense that Alexa would be looking for ways to increase revenue, the ads are much more prominent and distracting than they were on the old site.

A Few Things Alexa Missed

  1. A redesign of the Alexa widget. Give the Alexa widgets an overhaul OR enable users to customize the widgets themselves.
  2. Deep statistics history. Currently, you can only see about a year into the past. It’d be great to see the full history for each website.

Has The Alexa Algorithm Changed?

So far, there has been no indication that the Alexa ranking algorithm has changed. And based on the feedback from Alexa, it appears that this redesign is indeed purely cosmetic.

It is interesting to see the change but as best I can tell I won’t get really good data until I buy my own domain name. Does that seem right to you?

Well, Alexa data should be fairly accurate for Blogger. Alexa recognizes all of the subdomains as unique domains.

Lol yeah its about time they do something about their 60s look.

It was high time they change that old design.

You know what? I actually sent Alexa an email to give them positive feedback. I also suggested that they spruce up their widgets. :-)

Oh great, now I can’t find anything!

(You know there always has to be one, and I enjoy being it. ;) )

Yep, there’s always one person you can’t make happy. lol. You know, Alexa actually responded with a real reply to my email. And the guy mentioned that the widgets are indeed next on the list for a makeover!

Yeah, the new design is very nice, but the features they offer are still a bit stale in my opinion. They really don’t offer much but are praised across the inet. And the sites linking in count is always incredibly far off.

Not to sound negative, but I’ve felt this way about Alexa for awhile.
