Can Your Website Survive The Economy?

Like never before, the financial markets are in crisis. Last week, for example, we saw the weakening and collapse of some of the nation’s strongest companies such as Lehman Brothers and AIG. And while we do not yet know how this will affect the rest of us, we are sure to feel the effects sooner or later.

MoneyIf you own a business, this is troubling news. Chaos in the economy means that people will cut back on spending. And perhaps this means that your own revenue will be affected.

Below, we’ll discuss whether your website will survive this economic downturn, as well as ways to make your website more effective.

Is Your Website At Risk?

There are generally two types of websites: (a) those that provide necessary products and services, and (b) those that don’t.

Websites that provide necessary products or services may be social networking websites (like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn), blog networks (like Engadget and ProBlogger), bargain hunting websites (like eBay, or coupon websites), and websites that provide free services (such as ad-supported sites like Pandora and YouTube).

If your website does not fall in any of the above categories, it might be at risk. However, this doesn’t mean that it will fail.

Brace Yourself For The Worst

In an economic downturn, people will inevitably cut back on their spending. So to maintain your income, it will be necessary for you to reevaluate you website and make some changes.

1. Expand your target market.

The first way to maintain your income is to make your website available to a larger audience. Remember, anyone with an internet connection can access a website. Why limit yourself to a small geographical region when you can target an entire state, country, hemisphere, or the world?!

2. Improve your marketing strategies.

Depending on your marketing strategies, you may be looking a lot of money by paying for ineffective campaigns. Instead, opt for search engine optimization and free advertising.

If your website sells a product or service, reevaluate your sales pitch. Try to find ways to make potential customers see why they need what you can offer them.

3. Seek out other ways to make a buck.

If necessary, it might be a good idea to research other ways that you can make money from your website. This might be as simple as adding AdSense to your website or choosing affiliate programs with a higher conversion.

4. Trim the fat.

Finally, it is also a good idea to see what your biggest website expenses are. Some typical expenses include hosting charges, maintenance costs, and domain registration fees. While it might be difficult to reduce domain and hosting fees, perhaps you can save on your maintenance costs. For example, you can consider opting for a content management system. There will be a large initial cost, but over time it will save you a considerable amount of money.

You can do it!

A bad economy doesn’t mean that your website will fail. With a bit of work, creativity, and increased marketing efforts, your website can survive.
