@Ben: Yep, the laptop is key. Unfortunately, sometimes it is easier to use a desktop because of the larger monitors.

@Kurt: That is a huge drop in cost. I am sure if I completely stopped using my desktop I’d have similar savings.

Great article. Infact I use only my laptop since about 2 months now. And to say it…really my electricity comsumption went from Rs600 to Rs320 monthly now. Rs is the mauritian rupee.

Well I mostly let the lappy on sleep mode when I am away. Its for sure not very greeny

@Forsaken, yeh green is important. As for Google, they are a green company and do their best to offset their emissions. They have biodiesel vehicles on their campus, they give their employees bikes, they invest in clean energy, etc…

Google search produces around 7 grams of carbon. That is huge amount of emission considering the search stats per day. Its urgent time we went green and this is a very relevant post on how we bloggers can help cutting down the carbon emissions.

Power strip – check. A lot of people don’t realize the amount of money they can actually save by going green. Ever since I picked up the habit of turning things off when I don’t use them, it’s been money in the bank. My winter electrical bills are comparable right now to my summer electrical bill from a few years ago. It definitely makes a big difference.

@Kim, yes the car is usually the biggie. I am probably not that good at following my own tips, but I have done some things, especially with the power strip and turning off monitors instead of leaving them on screensaver, and I’ve noticed significant energy savings.

Great list of resources I’m constantly working to reduce my carbon footprint. Mine is already pretty low because I don’t own a car but is still higher than the world average.

I don’t print at home and I do the power strip turnoff. I used to leave my computer on all the time but now turn it off when I’m not there.
