Funny how things were looking back then.. nowadays Google should have lost his position to facebook already, no more talking about Yahoo.

Wow yea, I totally blanked on the games since I don’t play. Although a “Canasta queen” friend of mine bugged me for over a year wanting to teach me…she was eventually to the point where no one was good enough to partner with lol.

Are all the games really that huge?

@Kurt: Yeh, when I first checked, I was very surprised that Google wasn’t first. But when you think about it, Yahoo has a lot of popular services from ‘news’ to ‘games’ to ‘chat rooms’.

@Ajith: I agree. Myspace and FaceBook are already in the top 10. And other similar sites are growing just as fast. And yeh, Google India and Baidu will probably move up as well. Right now, stats say that people in India and China do not have that much access to the internet. But when they do they’ll dominate.

@Ben: Nope, not much effort needed to switch from Yahoo.

@Dennis: Yeh, the chat and the chat rooms are big. But the biggest would probably be the games. I mean, I don’t like Yahoo, but I sure do play Chess online at their website.

Yahoo mail, not to mention chat probably held them on top for so long…or at least helped a lot.

Thats a tough fight. I am sure google will take over the throne and hold it for quite some time. Like you said, won’t take long for the 20% yahoo fan to switch to google too.

In the top 10 six or seven are services from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft respectively. Nobody could have predicted the potential of portals when they started 12-13 years back right? Similar will be the case of social networks soon. Probably two years from now, the top 10 will be filled with at least 6-7 social networks.

Did you notice that Google.co.in (India) and Baidu (Chinese search engine) are at 11 and 12 positions? Since China and India contribute to more than 40% of the world population and these being emerging markets, I expect those two to be in top 5 in another five years.

I mostly use google to look for just anything but when looking for news i prefer yahoo somehow. Never really checked that..i thought google was first lol.

@Kim: I used to use Yahoo too. But then Google came along, and it didn’t take long for me to switch over.

That’s really interesting. I had no idea Yahoo was the top website. I used to use their email and custom home page way back but they lost me as some point.

Interesting observation. I never checked alexa.com for comparing these two gaints. I think google will go to the top slowly but surely.
