One thing that has always made Search Engine Optimization especially frustrating is that Google has never explicitly outlined what techniques webmasters should use. Even worse, Google regularly changes its algorithm, leaving webmasters and SEO experts guessing as they test frantically test new methods for success.
A few days ago, Google released a Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide (PDF).
And while it doesn’t have any special Google secrets on how to achieve the highest rankings, it is a comprehensive guide which outlines some of the best practices for page titles, meta tags, URL structure, website navigation, content, anchor text, heading tags, images, website promotion, and how best to use a robots.txt file.
If you’re a seasoned webmaster, you’ve probably heard all of this before. But this is a good review of the basics and will make sure that you are doing everything correctly.
And if you’re looking to find useful Google tools and additional resources to help you improve your search engine optimization techniques or get additional help for other questions you may have, the starter guide also has a list of helpful resources ranging from blogs to discussion groups and tools.
