Although Internet Explorer 7 was released in 2006, many users still haven’t upgraded from IE 6. And believe it or not, there are still people who use obsolete versions such as IE 5.0 and 5.5. And as web developers, we need to ensure that our websites are compatible with all modern versions.
Unfortunately, Microsoft makes it nearly impossible for us to install multiple versions of a browser on our computers. In most cases, for example, installing a new version simply upgrades and removes the preexisting version. This makes it hard to preview and test our websites.
Fortunately, there is a program which enables multiple versions of IE — both current and obsolete — to be installed.
TredoSoft has created a free program called MultipleIEs. Using it, you can easily install multiple versions of Internet Explorer which will not interfere with any other versions on your PC. See the screenshot below.

The program can be downloaded here. And you can view the TredoSoft product homepage here.
Unfortunately, this only works on a PC, and has limited compatibility with Windows 2000 and Windows Vista. For additional details, see the product homepage.
If you are not on a PC, this software will not be compatible with your system. But there are other tools that you can use.
First, you can opt for a screenshot service. One of the most popular services is Browsershots, which enables you to preview your website in about 75 different browser/operating system combinations. However, one drawback to these and similar services is that you have to wait up to an hour to get screenshots and may not be able to get as many screenshots as you want without opting for the paid version.
A second option is CrossBrowserTesting.com. Unfortunately, like Browsershots, there will be some waiting involved. And again, there is a priority service which minimizes your wait time and gives additional features. But one great thing about this service is that you are given the ability to load a virtual desktop and browse your website using a browser, just as easily as if it were installed on your own computer.
