Velvet Blues Is Now Comment Friendly!

You may have noticed a few changes to our blog over these last few weeks. Many of the improvements that have been implemented were based on some comments received in response to our recent article "3 Sneaky Ways to Trick Readers into Commenting", as well as a few tips that we’ve incorporated from around the web.

So what ALL did we change?

  1. We have added the Comment Luv plugin to showcase our readers’ latest posts on their blogs.
  2. Trackbacks/pingbacks will now be featured below comments.
  3. Gravatars — those little images next to commenters’ — names have been enabled. If you don’t have a gravatar, you can create one by visiting http://www.gravatar.com.
  4. We removed social bookmarking plugins and replaced them with simple text links. (Thank you Stratos for the tip.)
  5. For easy browsing, the latest articles are now displayed on all permalink/post pages.
  6. All admin comments are highlighted.
  7. Added the Subscribe To Comments plugin.

In the works:

  • Top commentators showcase in sidebar to give some link-love to our faithful visitors. Done!
  • What else do you suggest?

I like the improvements. I like seeing everyone’s images… Thanks for the gravatar tip. I need to go create one.

  • stratosg January 4, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Thanks for mentioning me. I saw it implemented here and i was glad someone used it. As for the improvements i like them a lot. I can’t think of anything to improve now but if i come up with anything i’ll be sure to drop by!

  • Jen January 4, 2009 at 7:41 pm

I would suggest maybe recent comments in the sidebar or to become do follow (if you are not already)

I think this weekend was the weekend for updating- maybe the new year. I made some of the same changes too.

    Great updates

    • Velvet Blues January 4, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Wow. I just checked out your blog. You did a complete overhaul! When you said changes, I thought you were just making minor updates. lol. I like it. It’s so spacious. :-) .

And I do like the recent comments in the sidebar. Good job.

  • Blog for Bloggers January 4, 2009 at 9:38 pm

I like the updates, I think it will work in your favor by adding commentluv and subscribe to comments plugins.
Keep us updated on all the things that come with the changes.

    • Velvet Blues January 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Yes I think that Comment Luv is probably the best improvement. I’ll also be adding the new 2.7 threaded comments feature which I think will also add to interactivity.

  • Ajith Edassery | DollarShower January 4, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Shirley, that’s a lot of self organizing and also rewarding the regulars with link love as well as accessibility.

After the current blog competition, I aim to enhance my blog with a professional theme and branding. Need to consider removing certain unfriendly plugins and fit in new ones.

    • Velvet Blues January 4, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Yep I did quite a bit. Many of these items were long overdue.

As for your redesign, I think that it would be a great move. Your blog already has the great content, decent traffic, and loyal visitors. All you need now is a matching professional design. :-)

I think I’ve not said this before. Using a blog to leap frog your business to greater height is one of the smartest and best decision you’ve ever made.

Once you have the top commentator plugin activated, I’ll include you into my PR list which is used by many bloggers to find blogs to comment.

    Good luck, Shirley.

    • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 12:44 pm

I agree. To add the blog was one of the best business decisions that I made. And I’ll be sure to let you know when I add the top commentator plugin. Thanks.

  • TechZoomIn January 5, 2009 at 2:11 am

Thats good enhancement you did.Am also planning to use commentluv plugin.

    • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Yes I really do like the Comment Luv plugin. And its a great decision to add it to your blog. It makes comments seem that much more interesting, and I feel like it causes me to read more blogs.

  • Melvin January 5, 2009 at 3:20 am

Nice to hear that. ACtually the last comment-related plugin I added is the comment-luv. Im really skeptic on putting it as it may slow my site down

    • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 12:44 pm

I was a bit nervous as well. As you can see, there are no other ‘widgets’ or any external items on my site. Even the ‘hostgator ad’ is a local image… But we’ll see how this words. If Comment Luv slows my site down, I’ll disable it. Thanks for visiting.

  • Wei Liang | Earn Money Online January 5, 2009 at 5:32 am

Cheers for the change Shirly. It just gives me more reason to come back to visit your blog. Are we going to see the top commentators widget coming soon?

    Wei Liang

    • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 6:05 am

The top commentators widget will be coming this week, probably today or tomorrow. And it should count all comments received starting the 1st. So you will be in the running! ;-)

      • Wei Liang | Earn Money Online January 5, 2009 at 8:31 am

That was fast to get the top commentator plugin loaded. Looks like you are determined in giving back something to your commentators. Welcome to my world =)

        • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Yes I’ve wanted to add that plugin for a while. It doesn’t actually take that much time to add, so it was just a matter of ‘deciding not to procrastinate’. :-)

  • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 8:01 am

@Everyone, The Top Commentators Showcase is here! There are 5 links up for grabs. Happy commenting. :-)

  • Bash Bosh January 5, 2009 at 10:00 am

Nice to see comments are enabled!
I don’t like when I come to site that doesn’t have comments integration!

    • Velvet Blues January 5, 2009 at 10:25 am

Oh yeh. Fortunately, only a few sites disable comments. Most realize that encouraging discussion can aid in website popularity.

  • Miguel @ Simply Blog January 6, 2009 at 8:40 am

    Shirley

Ye yes! Congrats on being blog friendly, this certainly is the way to go. Don’t know if I said this yet but Happy New Year! All the best to you, your family and blog in 09. :)

    • Velvet Blues January 8, 2009 at 5:32 am

Thanks for the belated New Year’s wishes. And same to you.

Yes, it was long overdue for me to add these features. And stay tuned, a few more are in the works! :-)

  • TrainWreckIdeas January 8, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I am looking for ways to make my blog more user-friendly. Does doing all this really help?

    • Velvet Blues January 8, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Yes I think that making your blog ‘comment friendly’ does improve the user experience. And with little things like ‘top commentators’ or ‘comment luv’, users are encouraged to give submit comments. It makes the website more interactive.

  • Geri January 24, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I think that this plugin, comment luv is a great way to reward other bloggers. It recognizes that they are active in the blogoshere.

  • dean February 23, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I’ve heard rumor that do-following comment harms the blog’s pagerank. Is it true?

  • Tari Conley March 27, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I love the top commentator plugin because it definitely increases traffic. I have read some comments about page rank being affected gradually. I’d like to know more about that if anyone knows about that. Thanks!

  • Hanna @ Watch Live Hockey May 17, 2009 at 10:48 pm

KeywordLuv and CommentLuv indeed increase traffic. Unfortunately they also increase spammer traffic. Oh, well! I guess we must have the bad along with the good.

  • Shane@Cheap Auto Insurance Rates November 24, 2009 at 2:05 pm

These plug-ins are very cool and user friendly. It’s such a great way to reward readers for their contributions and get lots of traffic to your site as well. Thanks for adding this to your site.

  • Charleston February 3, 2010 at 3:41 am

Sure is a very nice plugins. I’ve just got mine too on my site.
Is it advisable to have anti spams plugin with comment luv?

  • Corrin February 17, 2011 at 10:54 am
