3 Reasons You Should Never Pay For Advertising

One of the biggest problems that webmasters have is that of getting visitors to come to their websites. The easy solution: pay for advertising. However, before you enroll in a paid advertising campaign, it is important to know that better alternatives exist. And while paid advertising is effective in bringing new visitors, it is often not the best idea.

Here are 3 reasons why you should never pay for advertising.

1. Paid Advertising Is Expensive

Paid advertising does not come cheap. Typical campaigns cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars! Clearly, this is not feasible for the average small business. Even worse, large companies with larger advertising budgets will often receive better placement and circulation of their ads.

2. Paid Advertising Is Often Ineffective

Although, you will get visitors from paid advertising, the quality of the visitors is poor. And they are less likely to buy than visitors coming from other sources.

In an advertisement, for example, it is often hard to effectively convey the reasons why the customer needs your product or services and why it is better than other similar products or services on the market. So users generally click and find out, only after you’ve paid for the click, that they don’t want or need what you are offering. This is one of the reasons why PPC advertising is costly.

3. There Are Better Alternatives

Believe it or not, free alternatives are better. The options in the list below enable you to accurately represent your offering and reach a wide audience. Here are some alternatives you should try:

  • Blogging. While it may seem like a lot of work to develop a blog and start writing articles, it is very effective in generating traffic and spreading information. For more information on why starting a blog is a good choice, see our article 5 Reasons You Need A Blog.
  • Press Releases. Another way to get the word out is to create a press release. There are several free services which enable you to create and distribute your releases.
  • Article Marketing. Similar to blogging, article marketing requires you to write articles. The difference is that you then submit these articles to huge article databases around the net. In turn, webmasters who are looking for content may choose to feature your article on their websites. When they do so, they will include a little blurb about you or your website, and include a link. Depending on the quality of your article, you can receive a lot of traffic and inbound links as a result.
  • Participating in Online Communities. Another great method of advertising is by leaving a trail wherever you go. For example, whenever you add to a forum discussion or comment on a blog, be sure to include your link. For blogs, there is usually a field which enables you to leave a link. And for discussion boards, you can leave your own advertising in the signature. Of course, you don’t want to overdo it. For more information on what you shouldn’t do, see our article, 5 Things You Shouldn’t Do When Promoting Your Website.
  • Search Engine Optimization. Probably the most important method is search engine optimization. However, we have listed it last because it takes the most time to develop. But when done properly is the most effective way in bringing high quality visitors because it inspires trust… For more information on search engine optimization, see our article Organic Search and How It Can Help Your Website.

Of course, paid advertising is necessary at times. For example, if you need to get an immediate surge in traffic, paid advertising is the easy answer. However, it is always a good idea to try these free alternatives. Not only will they help your bottom line, they will also bring higher quality visitors that are more likely to buy.
