Web Design and Development
WordPress just released version 2.7.1, and you should upgrade now! There are some much awaiting bug fixes, and some additional functions which were added to the core WordPress API.
A complete list of bug fixes can be found in the WordPress trac, but some fixes that we liked include:
But the most exciting thing, by far, was the use of the automatic upgrade feature which was introduced in WordPress version 2.7. This feature helped us to upgrade our installation from 2.7 to 2.7.1 in a matter of seconds! … much faster than the 15-30 minutes it would take before.

I just upgraded to 2.7.1 using the inbuild system as well and I must say it is really fast and simple.
@Wei Liang: Indeed, upgrading couldn’t have been easier!
WPAU doesnt work anymore, so deactivated and tried built-in auto upgrade, but it failed. Im sure if I re-install manually with a fresh copy, the future auto upgrade might work, but the least WP could have done was point out additional steps to make the transition easier for WPAU instead of completely f*cking us in the ******.
@Tyger: Yes, I mentioned the use of the built-in automatic upgrade feature, not any plugin. And this feature only works on WP 2.7+.
So, if you are on an older copy, you would need to upgrade manually, and I think that WordPress has more than sufficient documentation.
If you are annoyed with the plugin, you should contact the plugin author, which is not WordPress. And if you look at the WordPress plugin homepage, it only says that it is compatible up to WP version 2.6.1… So, I guess you can’t expect it to work well with anything beyond it… Who knows, maybe they’ll upgrade their plugin.
Loved the automatic upgrade. Checked my blog, everything’s ok till now. Simply, WP rocks!
Now that’s what I call useful feature!
That’s right. Upgrading is not scarry and nightmare anymore.
I think it fixes something like 68 issues. It took a lot longer for .1 to come out than it did before – it usually seems to be released shortly after the version.
On the forums some users are having issues with the built in upgrade when the plugin is also installed – even when they aren’t using the plugin. It seems like the best thing to do is deactivate and uninstall it before using the built-in upgrade.
Hmm… that kinda compells me to upgrade. However, I have decided that unless there’s a huge change in the features (especially from the end user experience – much more than threaded comments that is) I am not going to upgrade.
Good to know that at least one of the main boasted featuers of 2.7.X actually works
@Richael: Yeh, the auto upgrade was a feature that was long overdue. It’s so good that there appears to be no bugs with it.
@Sardinia: Thanks for stopping by. Yes, this feature is great because it helps everyone stay secure and up-to-date AND it saves the non-technical people a whole lot of money.
@rudy: Indeed, not a nightmare at all. No incomplete upgrades or missing files. They should have added this a long time ago.
@Kim: Yeh, there were a whole lot of fixes. I looked at the WordPress trac and they’ve fixed bugs that I hadn’t even noticed. And yes, I have now noticed a few problems with that plugin… I did go over to the forums.
@Ajith: Yeh, there really haven’t been any changes in features for the user since 2.3. However, the backend is definitely more user-friendly and efficient. I am very happy that I upgraded from the 2.5/2.6 series.
It was never a nightmare for me, fantastico one-click anyone?
I still haven’t gone to 2.7…I suppose I’ll get to it before 2.8 lol.
@Dennis: I guess cPanel fantastico does offer upgrades. However, the problem is that when WordPress comes out with regular upgrades, fantastico takes a while to adjust. So it may take several weeks or months until fantastico is upgraded.
Good luck.
Ah yes, I asked them about the time delay (although months is stretching it missy lol)
Their response was that they like to make sure it is as stable as it’s gonna get (in their eyes anyway) before they offer it up.
That was just a plus in my eyes.
Haha. Yes, maybe I was stretching it a bit. But when I did use Fantastic for installs and upgrades, it seemed like it took forever to get the latest versions!
Thanks for keeping me honest.
LOL no worries. It annoyed me as well so I had to ask. Once I realized their reasoning I was more then ok with it.
Can anybody help me? For me wordpress automatic upgrade didn’t work. When i click on upgrade, i see downloading wordpress message and then nothing happens.
I finally upgraded manually
Shirley, i hope to see you on my blog…
@Nihar: Yes, I did finally run into one problem myself with the automatic upgrade. I was upgrading a site and it had incorrect file permission settings.
And apparently, other people have problems as well. But it probably has a lot to do with server incompatibilities.
I’m glad you were able to upgrade. But its a shame that you couldn’t do it the easy way.
@Velvet and @Nihar – Well, this is going in my links for tomorrow but I’ll give it to you guys early
It’s a troubleshooting list for problems related to using the built in auto-upgrade for upgrading to 2.7.1
http://lvsonline.com/online-blogging-classes/troubleshooting-wp-271-upgrade/
I’ve only tried the auto-upgrade on one of my sites and had trouble with it too – I need to try it on another to determine if it’s a problem with the host or not.
@Kim: Thanks for the sneak peak. That troubleshooting guide is definitely very useful.
I used to use Fantastico too, but I got frustrated with the delay on the security fix releases. Waiting for a stable release makes sense, but not so much for security patches.
The new built in upgrade feature is working great for most, but that won’t matter to you if you run into problems with YOUR upgrade. I am glad that my troubleshooting guide is coming in handy
@Bean: Indeed, you’d think that security patches would be of the utmost security for Fantastico…
That’s right. Upgrading is not scarry and nightmare anymore.
