WordPress 2.6.1 - Yet Another Quick Release

Today, exactly one month after the release of the last version, WordPress 2.6.1 has been released. With so many new version releases in such quick succession, you might be wondering what is going on at WordPress, whether there are any new features in this version, and if an upgrade is necessary.

Previously, in our article WordPress 2.6 Is A Go! Upgrade Now., we mentioned some of the reasons why certain users should probably wait for the next release. One of the most important problems was that certain permalink structures did not work. In this new patched version, this issue is resolved, as well as a host of other small issues. So those users can finally upgrade to get the features of 2.6.

But what about new features?

Is Anything New In WordPress 2.6.1?

These quick releases are not major releases. Instead, their main purpose is to fix all of the errors found in the current release. So there are no new features.

However, for international users, there are several improvements to the admin functions and the admin interface, as well as some Internet Explorer compatibility fixes. Additionally, the bug which had caused certain plugins to run slowly has also been fixed.

Should You Upgrade?

Usually there is a big push to upgrade to the newest version. However, since there are no major security fixes and no additional features, there is no real need to upgrade at this time. In the WordPress.org blog, users are advised: If you’re happy with 2.6, however, keep on using it.  You need not upgrade to 2.6.1 if 2.6 is getting the job done.

So if you are running WP 2.6, and are satisfied with the way your blog works, save some time or money and wait for the next big release.

FYI - Check Out The WordPress Theme Directory
