WordPress.org, Where Is The Love?

Well, it appears that the folks over at Automattic, the company behind WordPress, are showing some favoritism to the .com users. That’s right, they’ve already rolled out the new WordPress, version 2.7, for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. Apparently, those privileged users were able to upgrade a couple of days ago! Meanwhile, we .org users have been anxiously waiting, submitting feedback, and aiding in development, all to no avail…

So, when will WordPress.org release the new version for us? We don’t know. However, as announced on December 1, we can try out the latest release candidate and offer some comments for further improvement. And who knows, this recent release for WordPress.com might mean that our release will be coming soon.

Either way, here is some visual pleasure to tide you over. This is a picture of the dashboard, circa October 17, supplied by WordPress blog.

Since this screenshot was taken, there have been some exciting changes, namely those to the graphics and icons for the user interface. But the layout still remains pretty much the same.

We’ll keep you posted with news.

i am somewhat frustrated with this one too. they announced that they will be releasing it by December 10th or earlier. they said that they did it like this because they wanted to test it out on .com, fix some issues and come up with the final release of 2.7. good or bad this is it :)

It varies from release to release, for example 2.5 was released on .org before .com. The reason the entire team wanted to put it on .com first was because you (.org user) gets the benefit of 4.5 million beta testers before the release.

It’s super-helpful for two things: identifying any scaling or performance issues, and finding browser-related bugs. The former because it gets so much traffic, and the latter because its user base tends to be more mainstream than most WP beta testers so they are more likely to have older computers, browsers, and smaller resolutions.
